Let’s chat with Rana

Hi, I’m Rana! My journey into photography began during my maternity leave as a creative outlet and a way to capture better images of my children. However, I soon became enthralled by the realms of food and product photography, and my camera has been a constant companion ever since. That was five years ago. Over the years, my work has been featured in magazines, I have collaborated with a variety of brands, and I have been invited to photograph food events.

When I am not crafting images for Creatively Squared, I work full-time and frequently travel for my job. This extensive travel allows me to gain a deeper understanding of the world and explore the culinary delights of the countries I visit. It enriches my photography.

My by far favourites to photograph are BBQ related products/food photography and lifestyles, when I can show the products in their "habitat" so to speak. I also try to always up-skill my photography and make sure I try other genres to keep my portfolio versatile.

My personal aesthetic in photography is characterised by a blend of vibrancy and authenticity.

Journey with Creatively Squared

I saw Creatively Squared on Instagram and the visual of the page were so dynamic that I wanted to see more. Once I saw I could join, I didn't hesitate. Working with brands alongside talented colleagues of mine that create amazing images fosters camaraderie and provides me with learning opportunities.

As Creatively Squared grows, I grow as a photographer.

My Andrelon projects were both extremely interesting and at the same time challenging. Creating a feel and look of a fancy bathroom and try to diversify the images did occupy my mind for the entire time I was working on the project. I have learnt a lot.

Tools of the trade

I have my Canon R camera, tripod and reflectors. I always perform light correction in Lightroom and use Photoshop to edit more complex photos.

I love to use my backgrounds that I use to diversify the environment. I also love working in different locations in Veghel, the city where I live. It offers a variety of different locations from urban to forests. Apart from that, I love working in my home studio and backyard.

Rana’s creative process

Every photoshoot, I always plan. I print out the brief and brainstorm ideas, then I create a moodboard for these ideas. After that I write a definite list with sketches and only then I can proceed to work.

Depending on the project, I sometimes use my partner as a model. After all, he owes me for all the content for his page :) For hand models, I often ask my friend or use my own hands.

When I hit a wall and unable to produce any ideas, I simply take a pen and a paper and brainstorm. In those moments I write everything that comes to my mind without thinking whether it is a good or bad idea. To get into a space where I can create I need to be left alone, meaning no distractions and work for a specific amount of time to ensure I have slots to assess the work.

Finding inspiration

I love the work of Mariam Hamdy, and I follow the works of The Bite Shot and Contrse.

Top creative tip

Keep at it, try again and again, experiment with settings and light.

Lastly, what’s next for you?

This year I would like to add drink photography to my portfolio. Use more studio lighting and develop my skills for future projects.
